Shape Inclusive Tech: Two Seattle GIS Internship opportunities available

Digital maps shape how we all access city services, but not everyone can use them equally. Seattle IT’s Geographic Information System (GIS) team wants to change that. We’re hiring two GIS Accessibility Interns to help ensure Seattle’s digital maps are accessible to all—making a real difference for residents with disabilities while building valuable tech and public service skills.

Why This Matters

The City manages over 200 public GIS applications. By following ADA and WCAG standards, we’re committed to a digital city that everyone can navigate. As a GIS Accessibility Intern, you’ll help Seattle lead the way in accessible technology.

What You’ll Do

  • Review GIS apps for accessibility issues
  • Remediate barriers so maps work for all
  • Track improvements and document compliance
  • Build and update GIS data layers with accessibility in mind
  • Integrate city data through APIs
  • Collaborate with GIS and digital accessibility experts

Details & Eligibility

  • Position: 2 part-time GIS Accessibility Interns
  • Who Can Apply: Graduate or undergraduate students (any field related to GIS, tech, or accessibility)
  • Duration: Up to 18 months or 3 months post-graduation
  • Supervision: Seattle IT GIS team and Digital Accessibility Compliance
