Some lemonade stands sell a cold drink on a sunny day. Lil D’s Gratitude Lemonade serves something even sweeter: confidence, community, and a reminder that even the sourest lemons can become something worth celebrating.
At this year’s City of Seattle Juneteenth event, one of the food vendors comes with a story that is fresh-squeezed from love. Dai’Veon Lanier, known as “Lil D,” started his lemonade stand in 2018 when he was just five years old. With help from his grandmother, Gemini Kelly, what began as a small cart became a family business, a life classroom, and a joyful example of Black youth entrepreneurship.
And yes, the lemonade is delicious. But the story behind it? That’s the real zest.
A Lemonade Stand Built on Love and Life Lessons
When Gemini first imagined a lemonade stand for her grandson, she was thinking about much more than cups, ice, and lemons.
She wanted to create a way for Dai’Veon to learn important life lessons early. She wanted him to practice talking with people, counting money, making change, and understanding the value of hard work. Most of all, she wanted him to know that he could create something meaningful, even without having a lot to start with.
Gemini also knew the world is not always welcoming to Black children. So, she asked herself a powerful question: How can I help my grandson build confidence, independence, and purpose?
The answer came with a twist of lemon.
She decided to start small, stay creative, and build something that could teach Dai’Veon how to stand tall. The lemonade stand became a way to show him that with imagination, support, and gratitude, you can squeeze something beautiful out of humble beginnings.
The Gratitude Mantra Behind the Lemonade
Lil D’s Gratitude Lemonade is not just a name. It is a whole philosophy.
Gemini built the business around a mantra of gratitude, rooted in the idea that even sour circumstances can become something good.
As she puts it: “I came from the background of sour, rotten lemons — no matter how sour the fruit is, find a reason to be grateful.”
That belief shaped the stand from the beginning. When people came up to buy lemonade, Gemini hoped they would walk away with more than a refreshing drink. She wanted them to pause, smile, and find something to be grateful for in that moment.
“In this moment, we can do nothing else about nothing else,” she says, “but we can be grateful about something.”
That message is simple, bright, and powerful. It is also the perfect recipe for Juneteenth: joy, reflection, resilience, and community, all mixed together.
How Seattle’s Juneteenth Event Helped Lil D Shine
In 2018, Dai’Veon was only seven years old when Lil D’s Gratitude Lemonade vended at the City of Seattle’s Juneteenth event. It was his second event, but it became a major turning point.
Gemini says Juneteenth helped launch his career.
Anthony Davis, event organizer with the Seattle Information Technology (IT) department, knows firsthand the kind of magic that happens when community gathers to celebrate Juneteenth — and he says vendors like Lil D are a big part of what makes it special. “Lil D’s Gratitude Lemonade is exactly the kind of story we love to uplift at our Juneteenth event,” says Davis. “Seeing a young entrepreneur show up, connect with the community, and grow his dreams right here in Seattle — that is what this celebration is all about.” For Davis and the Seattle IT team, supporting young Black business owners is not just a nice moment, it’s the whole point.
The event gave Lil D something every young business owner needs: exposure, encouragement, and connections. Community members stopped by. Families met him. Organizations noticed him. People saw a young child learning business skills in real time, and they wanted to support him.
That kind of community support can be the sugar in the pitcher.
After the Juneteenth event, more opportunities started to pour in. Lil D’s Gratitude Lemonade went on to appear at events including the White Center Block Party, a festival in Arlington, Africa Festival in Snohomish, and more. Connections made through Juneteenth also helped open doors with groups like the Urban League, leading to additional events and support.
He even gave a school presentation on entrepreneurship, where students took interest in his journey. A lemonade stand that started as one grandmother’s idea became an example for other young people.
Talk about making lemonade and making moves.
More Than a Business: A Classroom on Wheels
Now 13, Dai’Veon has grown up with the business. Over the years, Lil D’s Gratitude Lemonade has helped him learn skills that many people do not practice until much later in life.
He has used money from the business to pay for camps, go shopping with friends, and buy his own school clothes. He also has a savings account and a CD trust account, helping him think about both today and the future.
That is a lot of growth from one little lemonade cart.
The business has expanded, too. Dai’Veon still has his original cart, but he has also invested in an inflatable, customized lemonade stand. What started as a creative idea with a Craigslist find has become a growing youth business with real roots.
Why This Story Belongs at Juneteenth
Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom, culture, history, and community. It is also a time to honor Black resilience and joy.
Lil D’s Gratitude Lemonade fits that spirit beautifully.
This is a story about a grandmother who saw the challenges ahead and chose to plant confidence. It is about a young Black entrepreneur learning how to lead, save, speak, serve, and dream. It is about a family using what they had to build something bright.
And it is about community showing up.
When people supported Lil D at Juneteenth in 2018, they were not just buying lemonade. They were helping a child see that his ideas mattered. They were helping a young business grow. They were adding sweetness to a story that keeps inspiring others.
That is the power of local events. They connect people. They open doors. Sometimes, they help launch a dream one cup at a time.
